Growing tips
Lettuce varieties vary in their tolerance for heat. In general it is easiest to grow before and after the hottest part of the summer. It can be direct sown or started indoors in cells or pots. All varieties can be spaced for individual heads or sown in a dense row for harvesting the young leaves, as a cut-and-come-again crop.
Season— prefers cooler temperatures, but some will stand as heads into the summer. Sow a new crop every few weeks if you like to have lettuce spring through fall, and look for a cold hardy variety to take you into winter.
Germination— Lettuce seeds require light to germinate, so cover only lightly and keep moist. Emergence in 4-8 days.
Sowing— indoors, sow one or two seeds per cell, allow to develop 2 true leaves and harden off a bit before setting out. Water in well and shade if possible if it’s very hot. Direct sowing outdoors, sow a few seeds every 6″ for heads, or more thickly for cutting lettuce. Cover lightly.
