Chiba is one of the quickest soybeans to flower and make pods. It gives us a chance here in Montana, where the chilly nights often discourage soybean growing.
For edamame, pick the pods with the beans inside plump and green, full-sized but not mature and dry. Boil or steam the pods, add salt or butter, open pods and eat the delicious beans. Direct sow when soil is warm and after last frost. 70-80 days fresh bean stage.

Growing tips: 
Beans prefer warm soil to germinate, so it’s best to sow when you’ll have a few warm sunny days in a row. Light colored bean seeds are more susceptible to rot in cold wet soil than are dark colored beans, so you can get away with earlier sowing of the black or red bean seed.

Season: Direct sow after danger of spring frost, into warm soil. In Montana this is usually late May or June.

Germination: Seeds can pop up in just a few days in good conditions, or may take up to a week.

Sowing instructions: 1 seed every 4 inches, about an inch deep.  2-3 rows per 4′ bed, or in rows 2′ apart.
