Description
Unique and resilient flour corn, with these advantages:
–high-quality protein. The Floury 2 gene gives it levels of some essential amino acids missing in other grains. This protein type is rare, and gives the corn a rich amazing flavor. Makes high protein food for humans or livestock, and is particularly good for chickens due to the significant levels of methionine.
–strong single stalks and higher placed ears make this corn potentially machine harvestable
–developed in adverse dryland conditions resulting in a corn that is fast maturing and produces under drought and stress
Homestead Hero is the product of 30 years of work by Montana corn breeder Dave Christensen. He works with natural breeding methods combining many corn ancestors for genetic diversity, and selects over many years for the qualities he is looking for. He created this variety in particular for people around the world surviving climate change and drought. Dave’s company is Seed We Need®
Soft starch flour corn excellent for fluffy cornbread and also binds well for tortillas. Cobs have 10-14 rows of yellow kernels. 134 kernels/oz. Dry grain in 115 days.
Grown by C&S Produce, Charley Overbay, in Big Sandy, MT.
Triple Divide Seeds grower Charley Overbay works with Dave Christensen, growing out several varieties of corn for Seed We Need. He adds that this crop was dry farmed in north central Montana. The 115 days to maturity are calendar days, not growing-degree days as is often used for corn. It is only slightly slower to mature than Painted Mountain.
